Lone finalist named for Commerce ISD superintendent

By Bill Oliver

Commerce, TX –

Mike Roberts was unanimously named the lone finalist for the superintendent's job by Commerce ISD trustees Tuesday night. Roberts, a Bonham native and Bonham high school graduate who has multiple degrees from Texas A&M University-Commerce, has been superintendent in the Sinton district north of Corpus Christi the last six years.

Five candidates were interviewed last week. Roberts was interviewed twice. Commerce board President Debbie Aikin said five candidates interviewed last week all met priorities listed by various community groups earlier in the spring.

Roberts' 34-year career in education began as a vocational agriculture teacher in Bonham, Sadler, and Whitewright. Then he moved to Terrell, where he was an assistant high school principal, elementary principal, then business manager. He moved to Weatherford to become assistant superintendent for business and operations before taking his first superintendent's post in Snook and in 2001 moved to Sinton.

The earliest the Commerce board can act on a contract is June 19th. After final contract approval Roberts will start in early July.
