LSC Scoop is reporting that San Antonio-based Incarnate Word has accepted an invitation from the SLC. The membership will coincide with the institution’s four-year transition to NCAA Division I. The website says it is expected that UIW will begin counting as an NCAA Division I team for scheduling purposes in 2014-15, and will be fully eligible for NCAA championship events in 2017-18.
Meanwhile, the Abilene Christian University Board of Trustees will meet this weekend and decide whether to join the Southland Conference. If approved and because of previous schedule commitments, the football team would begin SLC play in 2014, but all other sports would begin Division I competition with the 2013-14 school year.
According to the Lone Star Conference website, Incarnate Word has been a member of the league since 2010, while ACU's history dates back to 1973. The Lone Star Conference currently has 11 member schools after the recent exits of Northeastern State, Central Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southwestern Oklahoma State and East Central.
Texas A&M University-Commerce has been with the LSC the longest, since 1931.
