Major grant to bring more walkers, bikers

PARIS - Lamar County Commissioners have accepted a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant for $200,000 that will extend the Trail de Paris another three miles.

Trail Backer Earl Erickson says the grant application was submitted in January by the Friends of the Trail Committee, with the endorsement of the commissioner’s court. 80 percent of the grant is funded through the state, with a 20 percent match required locally. The trail will now run ten miles and travel further into Lamar County, reaching the City of Blossom.

“There were 60 eligible projects totally more than $9 million that were submitted statewide for new trail funding. And our project was one of only 21 projects selected,” Erickson said.

The Trail de Paris started as part of a Leadership Lamar County community service project in 2003. The stretch of trail is a small step in a massive project that hopes to connect Farmersville to Paris to New Boston.
