Major leg of SSISD project nearly complete

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – Work is coming along on the new Sulphur Springs Middle School, while the district's new Multipurpose facility is nearing completing.

The latest project update was presented to officials this week by Claycomb Associates Architects.

Crews are continuing the installation of interior walls and exterior sheathing and brick at the Middle School. They're just over a third of the way done, with completion this November. The 161,300 square foot school is located just off the new Highway 11 bypass south of Sulphur Springs.

The Multipurpose facility's indoor practice area is complete, as the turf and wall pads were recently installed. Tile floor will soon be laid in some of the building's additional rooms and sidewalk and exterior lighting installation is scheduled. Workers anticipate substantial completion by the end of the month.

The new Middle School and Multipurpose facilities are the main projects in a $48.4 million bond approved by voters in 2009.

Other projects included renovating the current middle school so third and fourth graders could move from four elementary schools, finishing the track complex for track and soccer and building four classrooms on the Douglas Fifth Grade Campus.
