Preparations for the severe weather season have begun. Klondike Volunteer Fire Chief Jerry Wood is ready this year with a newly installed weather siren.

“We hope to get approximately two-three miles of coverage, depending on the terrain and weather conditions,” said Klondike VFD Chief Jerry Wood. “The siren will be tested the first Monday of each month at approximately noon to 1 p.m.” He wants to make sure the public is aware of the test schedule which will begin on Monday, April 6, 2015. He is coordinating with the National Weather Service on the watches and warnings issued.

There are two different sounds:

1. A continuous wail, will be used for a WATCH; it will sound for approximately two to three minutes. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather per the NWS.

2. A HIGH/LOW sound like a siren on a fire truck will be used for a WARNING and will also sound for two-three minutes. A warning means severe weather is imminent or occurring and to take cover.

A free SKYWARN class will be held at the Delta County Civic Center on Monday, March 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. This is a part of an area-wide severe weather preparedness campaign, which will include spotter training sessions across 46 counties in North and Central Texas.
