Man confirmed dead after falling from crane, ending hours-long standoff

CBS DFW

DALLAS - Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Melinda Gutierrez tells the Associated Press that the man who climbed a 150-foot construction crane at a college campus has fallen to his death.

Update @ 1:23 p.m.: The Dallas Police Department has identified the suspect as 44-year-old Lee Dell Thomas, Jr.

From earlier: The standoff lasted about 14 hours, ending just before 2 a.m. Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear why the man scrambled up the crane Monday afternoon. The crane towers over the campus in University Park, which was closed for Memorial Day.

Police sent tactical officers to the top of the crane, at Southern Methodist University. The man clambered out of the cab and dangled from it, holding on with only his hands, before falling. Police did not immediately say whether the man had a weapon, as he earlier claimed.

CBS 11 News reports the crane did not have power or air conditioning on a day where temperatures reached 95 degrees. They say the man was believed to be the same suspect in an aggravated robbery case which took place early Monday in downtown Dallas.
