Man killed, state trooper injured in Paris

A Texas Department of Public Safety officer shot and killed a man outside of Paris Regional Medical Center following an altercation on Monday night, according to an official release. The state trooper, whose name has not been released, suffered a dislocated shoulder in the incident, officials said.

The struggle began after the officer tried to check on the status of a man sitting on a concrete barrier in the middle of U.S. Hwy. 82 at approximately 7:30 p.m., the release said. The man responded to the officer by becoming combative, officials said. The state trooper used a tazer on the man, who continued fighting, the release said. Texas Department of Public Safety information officer Mark Tackett said the officer “feared for his life” after suffering the shoulder injury during the conflict.

The officer was treated for a dislocated shoulder at Paris Regional Medical Center. The man was identified as Steven McKenney, 21, of Austin.
