Maroon & Gray Foundation surprises Elementary with grant money

The Maroon and Gray Foundation surprised teachers at Cooper Elementary during last week’s pep rally. A trio of grants was presented to various projects.

“It was very exciting to surprise the teachers. We hope to do more than just classroom grants and expand into professional development for teachers too,” said Diane Stegall, Maroon and Gray Foundation Board member. “Other foundations at other schools were doing this and we thought it would work well for us too plus we will still be offering our graduates scholarships.”

Cooper Elementary Librarian Cindy Davis received a grant in the amount of $1,000 for her project, “When I Read, I Succeed!” This grant money will be used to purchase books for Emergent levels and Higher level readers. The books will assist the Elementary campus in succeeding in the Accelerated Reading program.  The AR program was extended recently to the Kindergarten level and with this grant the library will be able to keep sufficient books on the shelves for all students.

Shonda Rutledge of Gifted and Talented also received $1,000 from the Foundation to be used for taking 112 students from the ESL and GT programs to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.   This grant money will give the students an experience that would not normally be possible and extend their knowledge of Nature and Science.

Maroon and Gray Foundation gave $459.91 to the project titled, “Catch a Falling Star,” by applicants: Lynn Byrd, Jana Choate, Sharon Arthur, Kenda Kinnamon, Carolyn Irvin, Charlene Wilkins, Shonda Rutledge and Christie Cooper to benefit the Cooper Kindergarten. This grant will allow the teachers of the Kindergarten level to use the Starfall website to bridge the gaps of literacy at the kindergarten level and continue to motivate students that are already excelling at a higher level. This grant will reach 55 students in Kindergarten and enrich their learning experience at Cooper Elementary.

Stegall said the Foundation should have a website up and ready in about a month for online contributions. Until then they are accepting donations and memorials through First National Bank, c/o Maroon & Gray Foundation, P.O. Box 349, Cooper, Texas 75432.
