Mistreated horses given new owners

By Brad Kellar

Hunt County – Hunt County Justice of the Peace Hershey Barnett has ordered eight horses receive new, temporary owners.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) of Texas was awarded custody of the horses following a Thursday hearing. Restitution was also awarded to them in the amount of $1,120.

The horses were seized from southern Hunt County last week for alleged mistreatment. A statement reads the horses lacked appropriate food and water and also were not receiving adequate veterinary care.

A similar decision was made last month in Hopkins County, as new owners were granted to horses that were alleged to have been mistreated over an extended period of time.
