National Night Out

By Kevin Jefferies

Northeast Texas – The National Night Out is set for August 1st all across the country. Last year, 34 million people participated in the event that seeks to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation in local anticrime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Greenville will be participating in their 14th National Night Out with at least 24 neighborhoods participating. Last year, Greenville was recognized for the fourth straight year by program sponsor, the National Association of Town Watch; and had 32 neighborhood events with over 1,200 people participating.

Bonham will also be involved in the Night Out, with free hot dogs, drinks, live music, and McGruff the Crime Dog at the VA Recreational Park beginning at 6pm.

Commerce will be organizing events at the City Park in Commerce from 7pm to 9pm Tuesday. New K9 unit Rocco will be on hand to introduce himself to the community.

Contact you local law enforcement officials to find out if the National Night Out is being recognized in your area.
