New apartment comlex planned for Commerce

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – Commerce property owner Mike Oglesby has received approval to revive the existing structure at 1600 Lee Street, just north of campus, into a restaurant/multi-family dwelling.

The property, adjacent to the East Texas Bookstore, would be converted into a mixed used facility with a restaurant located on the first floor, and five apartments on the second floor.

The plans are similar to what Oglesby constructed two years ago at 1708 Monroe Street, which is now home to Plain and Fancy Sandwhich Shoppe, who opened last week.

Oglesby has been working with Texas A&M University-Commerce to secure parking for the Lee Street complex.

The building is believed to have been in existence since the 1920's, and operated as a burger restaurant in the 1960's.

The Commerce City Council authorized a conditional use permit for the property during Tuesday night's meeting.
