New hispanic service begins next month at Commerce ISD

COMMERCE - A grand opening is planned later this month for the Commerce Community Plaza, an educational service for Hispanic families.

According to Commerce ISD Personnel and Communications Director Ludonna Smithers, the district applied and was accepted by the Mexican Consulate to provide the service. Maria Garza will coordinate the project, organizing tutoring sessions around family schedules and scheduling volunteers to work as tutors.

Working in conjunction with Texas A&M University-Commerce, the center will begin its first cohort February 6 working with approximately 10 families in the area. One-on-one instruction and group studies are offered by the curriculum provided by the Mexican Consulate.

The grand opening is scheduled for January 23 from 6-8 p.m. at A.C. Williams Elementary School.
