New Jobs Across the State, but Unemployment Up in Northeast Texas

Texas has added 179,000 new non-agricultural jobs since the beginning of the year, but the unemployment rates in Northeast Texas grew slightly in December.

The latest numbers from the Texas Workforce Commission put unemployment rate in most counties in the region at about 4 percent in December. That’s slightly worse than where they were in November and compared to a year prior. The two exceptions: Grayson and Rains counties, which each saw slight drops in unemployment compared to December 2015. All counties reported higher unemployment numbers in December than November.

Wood County had the highest unemployment rate in the region, 5.3 percent in December. Rockwall County, with 3.4 percent unemployed, had the lowest totals.

The Texas state  unemployment rate ending the year was 4.6 percent, just above the US average of 4.5 percent.
