New trial denied for Commerce man

By Brad Kellar

Commerce – A new trial has been denied in a Commerce shooting.

During a hearing Monday, a judge denied motions for a new trial for Howard Weatherall Jr., recently convicted and sentenced to prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He was found guilty by a jury in February of shooting a male victim in Commerce two years ago and sentenced to 40 years in prison on both counts, to run concurrently.

Reports indicate the crime occurred in the 400 block of MLK in September, 2007. Weatherall had shot an individual at the location five times after the two had engaged in a verbal altercation. Weatherall was also shot during the disturbance.
