No action taken regarding cell phone ban in school zones

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce School Board took no action last night regarding the prohibited use of cell phones in school zones.

The item was placed on the agenda after a citizen expressed concern during the board's June meeting, of how operating a cell phone in a school zone can limit an individual's attentiveness, therefore posing a risk to students.

The board is still awaiting information from the City of Commerce regarding specifics of what such an ordinance would entail. Once they receive information from the city, board members will then give their input, after which the ordinance will go before the Commerce City Council for approval.

Highland Park, University Park, Dallas and Rowlett have all been among area school districts this year that have prohibited the use of cell phones and other hand-held communications devices in school zones when those zones are in effect.
