Residents of the Northern Hopkins County area will be asked to vote on whether the school district should use $5 million in bonds to extend the elementary wing of the school on the May 10th ballot.
NHISD Superintendent Donna George is excited at the prospect of expanding the elementary school.
NHISD trustees voted on Feb. 27 to call for a bond election for a new elementary classroom addition to help with space issues. George explained it will help with district growth over the last two years.
“We’re averaging 480 kids. We’ve not been below that the last two years. We were about 450 before that. At one time, we reached 506 this year,” George said, adding that state teacher-student ratios in elementary classes and limited amount of classroom space have made that growth a challenge at times.
George said that expanding the school would house 14 classrooms, add elementary offices and free up space in the elementary wing.
“We are looking forward to it, but it will be up to the community, what they see for us,” George told the News-Telegram.
