Northeast Texans pay respects to fallen soldier

By Scott Harvey

Greenville – Area residents were in Greenville Wednesday to honor U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Shawn McNabb, who was killed in a helicopter crash one week ago in Afghanistan.

McNabb's body arrived at Major's Field Municipal Airport at noon. Area firefighting units where on hand to provide an honorary cascade of water as the plane taxied to a waiting hearse.

McNabb, of Poetry, located along the Hunt/Kaufman County line, graduated from High School in Terrell in 2003.

Among the spectators at Wednesday's motorcade was Mitch Benway, of Point.

"I figured the things that I had to do weren't as important as showing my support to the family, and thanking the troops for keeping us safe at night," said Benway. "We live comfortably, we live well, we live safe and secure. They stand watch over us every day and it was just a small way to show gratitude."

McNabb is to be taken to Terrell where a visitation is scheduled for Thursday night. A funeral service with full military honors will be held Friday.
