Northeast Texas doctor to pay back more than $817,000

SULPHUR SPRINGS - During a restitution hearing Wednesday, a Hopkins County judge set the payment for longtime Sulphur Springs physician Dr. Don O’Neal at more than three-quarters of a million dollars.

He pleaded guilty last November to misapplication of fiduciary funds.

A hearing has been set for July 2 to learn specifics of the plan to pay back the roughly $817,000.

District Attorney Martin Braddy commented Wednesday, "The hearing showed ... that Don O’Neal is a wealthy man and can pay every bit of that restitution right now and needs to. ""

O’Neal is still facing legal trouble, according to the Sulphur Springs News-Telegram. He and his wife and daughter-in-law were also indicted for theft and Medicaid fraud as the result of an investigation by the Texas Attorney General's office.
