Not guilty plea heard in connection to area shooting

By Brad Kellar

Merit – A not guilty plea has been heard in connection with a Merit area shooting. Karen Curtis Cox, of Farmersville, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge she hindered the apprehension of a suspect who allegedly shot her husband in September. Cox received the indictment in December on the charge. Her husband, Darryl Cox, was shot in the stomach during the Sept. 7, 2008 incident at his residence near Merit in the northwest corner of Hunt County. James Robert Lemons was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but court records did not reveal any indictment against Lemons as of Tuesday afternoon. Shortly following the shooting Cox is reported to have told investigators Lemons was her boyfriend, but said she did not think he could have been the one to shoot Darryl Cox.
