Officials close to ending burn ban

SULPHUR SPRINGS - Hopkins County Commissioners could soon join a growing list of area counties that have lifted their ban on outdoor burning.

The committee has authorized Judge Chris Brown to lift the current ban should drought conditions improve, which is possible with a chance of rain Wednesday. The current index is at 6.5 on the Keetch-Byram Drought Severity stage. The county’s threshold is 5.75.

If conditions don’t improve, the ban will continue until January.

Within the past week, commissioners in Collin, Grayson, Kaufman, Rains and Van Zandt counties have voted to lift their burning restriction.
