Officials continue to urge caution on roadways

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – Recent weather conditions in northeast Texas have not only played havoc on motorists, but on emergency responders as well.

Late Monday evening and early Tuesday morning alone prompted nearly a dozen emergency calls to officials in Commerce regarding minor traffic accidents. One individual was reported injured after he had to jump off a bridge north of Commerce to avoid a sliding vehicle that was part of a string of accidents on state highway 24/50. No major injuries, however, were reported.

Commerce Fire Chief Brian McNevin stressed Tuesday that if you don't need to drive, then don't. He said patchy but not a consistent slab of ice seemed to cause the biggest problems for motorist, because it can give drivers a false sense of control and perhaps lead to a lack of judgment of road conditions.

Drivers are again to use caution when on the roadways Wednesday, mostly due to low visibility from patchy fog.
