Oxford to take third swing at council seat

Charles Oxford hopes that that the third time will be a charm as he tries once again to regain a city council seat.

There are two contested city council seats in the May 11 Sulphur Springs municipal election.

Place 4 will go to either incumbent Freddie Taylor or challenger Charles Oxford, who served on the council in 2010 but lost election bids in 2011 and 2012.

Gary Spraggins, the Place 5 incumbent, will face a challenge from Emily Glass.

Two Hopkins County school districts will also hold elections. Yantis schools will choose two trustees from among three candidates: challenger Colby Ogle and incumbents Mike Kinney and Joni Moreland. Como-Pickton schools will also choose two trustees from a field of three: Charlie Leigh-Manuell is challenging incumbents Greg Anglin and Beth Hankins.

Sulphur Springs Independent School District canceled its election earlier this month, as it only had three candidates sign up for the three available seats on the board. newcomer Leesa Toliver and incumbents Kerry Wright and John Prickette will take the oath of office during the next board meeting on May 13.

Voting will be conducted at Sulphur Springs Independent School District Adminstration Building, 631 Connally St.
