Parade tonight in Commerce!

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – The Commerce Christmas Parade is tonight in downtown Commerce. The west end of the square will be blocked off around noon today so the stage can be set for live music, food, and other activities tonight. The Commerce Middle School Band starts everything off with festive holiday music around 4:30 this afternoon. Performances by other youth groups and organizations are to follow. Hot chocolate, stew, and chili will also be available.

At 6:15 this evening, a candlelight vigil for victims of violent crime will be held. Following at 6:30 will be the annual lighting of the Christmas tree, with girl scouts singing carols. The parade begins at 7pm, and this year's theme is Christmas in Commerce with participants utilizing their own themes or subjects. Commerce City Manager Bill Shipp said the city staff has been working on a float, and they are out to set the bar high.

SHIPP: We've been working on a float...the city will have a float in the parade. Some of the staff members have really put alot of work into it. Its pretty cool. So we're out for first prize again, this year. We didn't get it last year, we got it the year before. It was an aberration last year, we're back in it again this year.

The rest of downtown will be closed off around 5pm to provide a safe area for the festivities.
