A dramatic attempt to escape from local police in southern Hunt County ended with a suspect injured and in jail, according to a statement released on Jan. 13 by the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said that Brandon Brewer, 26, of Balch Springs, was arrested on the morning of Jan. 13 by West Tawakoni police. Officers had responded to a call reporting a suspicious vehicle on S.H. 751 south of Quinlan, the statement said. Police arrived to find Brewer near a black passenger car, police said. A warrant search revealed Brewer had an active felony warrant from Collin County and police arrested him, the statement said. Officers found that Brewer had a bag of a powdery substance that officers suspected was methamphetamine, they said.

Brewer was handcuffed and placed in a West Tawakoni police car and while officers were out of the car, Brewer climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away, the statement said. Police in a Quinlan Police Department car pursued Brewer, officials said. Meanwhile, a Sheriff’s Department deputy set up a roadblock on County Road 3622, the statement said.

Upon arriving at the roadblock, Brewer stopped briefly, then drove the car toward officers who were on foot, police said.  The officers fired at Brewer, who crashed into a tractor-trailer that was standing on the roadway, the statement said.

Brewer was taken to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville, treated for minor injuries resulting from the crash, then placed into the Hunt County Detention Center in Greenville, the statement said.

Brewer has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, escape from custody, evading arrest in a motor vehicle and aggravated assault on a peace officer, officials said.
