Pool likely topic at council meeting

City leaders will revisit the question of what to do about the city’s troubled municipal swimming pool.

The Commerce city council meets this evening for the first time since a recent public forum about the fate of the city’s pool. The Commerce municipal swimming pool has been closed since last summer, when a water pump failed. Since then, the city has been wondering whether to make costly repairs to the existing facility or to plot a course for building a new city pool. Either option would likely involve expenses beyond the means of the city budget. A bond has been discussed as a way of funding a new pool, possibly in conjunction with another city-maintained facility in crisis, the Commerce Public Library. A few have suggested that a new pool and new library could be part of the same building project.

It’s too close to next month’s municipal elections for a bond question to appear on the May municipal ballot. There are no elections scheduled for this November. A bond initiative could appear on ballots next year, or earlier, if a special election is called.
