Private Schools: 2013 football preview

These private schools start their football season tonight.

Greenville Christian Eagles

Last year was a disappointing season for coach David Wombaker and the Greenville Christian Eagles. After a one-win season, the Eagles hope to turn things around in 2013. The bulk of the responsibility this year will be placed on the five offensive and five defensive returners.

Quarterback Will Martens and Wide Receiver Andy Henderson are a talented duo that will have to produce if the Eagles are to have success. Senior Luke Johnson will be given the duty of leading the offensive line from the center position. Juniors David Chandler and Morgan Henry will split duties in the backfield.

Wombaker certainly has his work cut out for him in turning this team around. However, with several contributors and leaders returning on offense, Wombaker won’t be alone in his endeavor to transform Greenville Christian football into a winning program.

Head Coach: David Wombaker 2012 Results: 1-9 Overall, 0-5 in TAPPS 6M Division I District II Top Players: QB Will Martens, Sr. WR Andy Henderson, Sr. C Luke Johnson, Sr. RB David Chandler, Jr.

Heritage Christian Eagles

After an impressive 10-win season in 2012 for coach Robert Huckabee and the Heritage Christian Eagles, repeating that same performance in 2013 will be a challenge. Only four starters will return off a team that had seven seniors a year ago. The leadership of this new group of Eagles will be crucial to their success this year.

A few names that will look to fill these roles include running backs Wyatt French and Colin Westmoreland as well as full back Travis Cooper. The defense will be lead by cornerback Ben Migneault.

While the pressure is on the Eagles to repeat the performance of last season, Huckabee will have to mold many young players quickly. However, the returning starters have the experience of being on a winning team and can hopefully imitate the same leadership that last years seniors brought.

Head Coach: Robert Huckabee 2012 Results: 10-3 Area Finalist, 4-1 in District Top Players: RB Wyatt French, Sr. CB Ben Migneault, Sr. RB Colin Westmoreland, Jr. FB Travis Cooper, Sr.

Phoenix Christian Firebirds

The Phoenix Charter Firebirds and head coach Rich Gant didn’t have the best 2012 – finishing 3-5, 1-1 in TCAL Division District I – but there’s hope that this year they can reverse that record and make the playoffs.

Last season the Firebirds had a very up and down season, beating Universal Academy 90-42, and then losing 48-8 to the Tyler HEAT the next week. It seemed that last year Phoenix either won by 40 points or more or lost by that same margin.

This year, Gant’s team has a little more experience with senior running back and defensive end Antwan Blakely (5-8, 160) and senior running back, quarterback and linebacker Marcus Thomas (5-10, 165) returning to run the offense, and defensive tackle Michael Monroe (6-1, 180) returning on defense.

The schedule for the Firebirds is interesting this year, as all three teams that Phoenix defeated are on the schedule again. But so are four of the five teams that beat the Firebirds in 2012. The schedule is also two games longer.

Head Coach: Rich Gant 2012 Results: 3-5, 1-1 in TCAL Division I District I Top Players:  RB Antwan Blakely Sr., 5-8, 160; Rushing 59-369, 4 TD. LB Marcus Thomas, Sr., 5-10, 165; 32 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 interception, 1 fumble. DE Michael Monroe, Sr., 6-1, 180.
