Privatization plans fall through

By Kevin Jefferies

Greenville – Plans to privatize the Hunt County Jail ended yesterday when commissioners found hiring a private company more expensive than current operational costs. The proposal submitted by the firm CiviGenics would have seen the county paying around $35 per day per inmate while the jail now costs Hunt County under $24 per day per inmate. The firm's proposal did include an increase in service including a staffing level of 94 detention personnel, with additional medical staff, a comptroller, and shift lieutenants and shift sergeants. The Hunt County Jail currently has 63 jailers, but hope to add five more positions early next year.

Overall, Hunt County Commissioners felt Sheriff Don Anderson was running an efficient operation with the funding available.

With the privatization issue settled, the Hunt County Commissioner's Court will soon be scheduling two public sessions to ratify this year's budget.
