Public invited to meeting on Hwy 154 project

By Scott Harvey

Hopkins County – Hopkins County officials and TxDot will again hold a community meeting tonight to discuss the State Highway 154 project south of Sulphur Springs.

The public is invited to attend the meeting, which takes place at 6 p.m. at the Seymour Church of Christ.

A number of fatal crashes have been blamed on the highway over the years due to the narrow road, poor sight lines and various blind spots.

Since the meetings began, TxDot has lowered the speed limit from 65 to 60 miles per hour, put in larger speed limit and warning signs, shored up eroding edges of the roadway, and added a raised stripe on the side of the road to warn motorists who veer outside the line.

Crews are currently working to add shoulders and turn lanes to a 1.5 mile stretch of the highway, at a cost of $3.9 million. Two more phases are planned in the future.

Ultimately, officials want to create a two-way highway with 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders on each side all the way to the Wood County line.
