Public meeting set on Greenville superfund site

By Brad Kellar

Greenville – Residents of a Greenville community will learn more about an area superfund site. A public meeting is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center regarding the former ESCO manufacturing plant in the Ardis Heights area.

In March, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicated it was hoping to obtain $15 million in stimulus funding for cleanup of the site.

Test on the soil at the old plant discovered the ground is contaminated at depths up to 15 feet. The EPA has also confirmed PCB contamination in the soil of 35 properties in the area.

The former ESCO facility was added to the superfund list in September, 2008.
