Purchase to increase HMHD's cancer unit capabilities

By Scott Harvey

Hunt County – The Hunt Memorial Hospital District decides to discuss the tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year during the board's August meeting, rather than call a special session.

The district's 2009-2010 budget must be set by September.

Last year the HMHD Board of Directors opted to not change the rate from the previous year, which remains at $.2138666 per $100 valuation. Officials felt there was no need to do so last year, due to the local property value increases.

It is unclear what the board may propose for this year, however.

Also during Tuesday night's meeting, board members approved the purchase of a prostate radiation therapy unit. The Brachytherapy unit is locally becoming an increasingly popular alternative for the treatment of prostate cancer. The $125,000 purchase should take about a year and a half to pay off, and officials estimate the item will bring in about 20 cases each year.
