Rains cause damage for some, benefit others

By Scott Harvey

– While heavy rains and flooding have led to road closures in some east Texas cities, the weather comes as a blessing to some areas not as heavily affected.

Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap says area farmers should benefit.

"It's really what we'd call a million dollar raid because it's been hot and dry for the past two/three weeks," Millsap said. "Now we're getting a shower over here so it makes everything kind of come out and bloom and grass is going to be growing a little for the next two weeks so we'll get another cut of hay."

But it's a different story in counties south of Interstate 30. In the Kaufman County city of Mabank, police say at least four houses flooded and one resident had to be evacuated.

Tyler police were reporting about 10 streets closed due to high water, but nobody was hurt.

There's also been one flood-related death in central Texas.

Governor Perry has activated state resources to respond to serious flooding areas.

Flash flood watches and warnings have been issued for a number of east Texas counties. Stay with KETR for all the latest in severe weather coverage.
