Rains Help Drought, But True Relief Still Waits

National Weather Service

Recent rainfall has moved much of Northeast Texas into moderate drought. And while being in any state of drought might not be ideal, several counties in the region, including Fannin and Grayson, had until the Texas Water development Board’s most recent status report this week been classified as areas of severe drought. Lamar county was one of three counties in the region to have been classified in extreme drought.

The National Weather Service is calling for a steady dose of rain and even thunderstorms through Christmas Day, which water experts hope will alleviate much of the problem. Robert Mace, deputy executive water science and conservation administrator at the TWDB, said, however, that conditions of extreme drought are “still peeking into the chimney of Lamar County”

Northeast texas has recorded less than an inch of rainfall so far in December.
