Record heat claims life of Commerce woman

Commerce Police are reporting the death of a 48-year-old woman in what is believed another heat-related case in Texas.

At around 7 p.m. Sunday, emergency crews responded to Regency Square Apartments in the 2300 block of Washington Street to a call of a deceased person.

According to a release from the department, Jannell Kay Rich may have died as a result of the heat along with underlying medical problems.

Rich's body has been sent to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. A tentative ruling Monday indicated the death was due to accidental hyperthermia with complications of the woman's medical conditions. A final ruling will be determined after further tests are conducted.

Police are asking for the public's help in checking in on the elderly and those that may not be in good health. If you know of anyone meeting that criteria needing assistance with air conditioning problems, please contact the Commerce Police Department at (903)886-1139.
