By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The IRIS Emergency Notification System for Commerce citizens is approaching its one-year anniversary, and residents are being reminded of its annual fee.

If you are currently a subscriber to this service and receive a city water bill, an annual charge of $6.00 will be added to your September bill. If you currently subscribe to this service by do not receive a city water bill, you will need to come to City Hall to renew. Those who wish to cancel must do so by request by August 31.

IRIS can act as an emergency response system or a routine message distributor. It sends alert message to thousands of recipients in about 30 seconds and reaches recipients by telephone, cell phone, digital pager, wireless PDA device, email and or computer.

The program has been utilized several times during severe weather, warning citizens of potentially hazardous events.
