Coach David Petroff and the Royse City Bulldogs are coming off a one-win season in 2012, and hope to get a fresh start for a program that has won three games in four years.

The Bulldogs will have to cope with the loss of 22 seniors, while relying on the 18 returners including 12 starters. While it could be challenging to make the playoffs, Royse City has many key players that will pose huge threats to competitors.

The offense will feature tight end Bryce Wempa, who has great hands and will be a primary target for quarterback Jackson Watts. Offensive lineman Brandon Martinez might be a challenge for opposing defenses against Royse City’s spread offense.

Three Bulldogs could lead the defense this season. Safety Austin DeWees will look to increase his interception total of 2 in 2012. Defensive end Justin Loftis will be a force for opposing quarterbacks, and Cody Faulk will lead the Bulldogs’ defense from the linebacker position.

Petroff hopes to change the culture this season for a Royse City football team that has become accustomed to more losses than wins per season. Though the challenges of turning a football program around are lofty, the returning starters for the Bulldogs hope to make a difference in the 2013 season.

Forney is the first opponent that Royse City will face, and they should be a good litmus test of the season to come, as they finished 5-6, 4-3 in District 10-4A with a playoff appearance last year. Royse City travels to North Forney (2-8, 1-6 in District 10-4A) in Week 2, and then hosts Prestonwood Christian (8-4 area finalist, 3-3 in TAPPS Division I District I) to end the non-district play.

Royse City’s district schedule starts off easy with games at Greenville (0-10, 0-7 in District 13-4A), against McKinney North (3-7, 3-4 in District 13-4A), and at Denison (2-8, 2-5 in District 13-4A); but the tail end of the 2013 season is rather challenging, as the Bulldogs host Sherman (9-3 area finalist, 6-1 in District 13-4A), and then have consecutive away games at Wylie East (9-4 regional semi-finalist, 5-2 in District 13-4A), and at Lucas Lovejoy (11-1 area finalist, 7-0 in District 13-4A) before getting a bit of a breather with Senior Night against Wylie (5-7 area finalist, 4-3 in District 13-4A).

Royse City is unlucky to be in a district with seven other teams, as it will be much harder to snag one of four playoff spots this year.
