Royse City to get crime stoppers hotline

By Scott Harvey

Royse City – The Royse City Police Department is seeking the adoption of a crime stoppers hotline.

The city has been discussing options both with Rockwall and Hunt Counties for the past month. They are also considering a hotline for the school district as well.

Royse City Police Chief Tom Shelton says making citizens aware of such a service will go a long way in preventing and solving crime.

''We had [during] one of our burglaries, the person actually saw some kids out looking into cars and trying to open cars and didn't even call in [and] the next night we get a call that ten cars have been broken into,'' says Shelton.

''Things like that could be prevented if citizens got involved; and they're starting to now.''

A possible crime stoppers hotline comes on the heels of a six month crime report issued by the police department that shows a significant increase in crime, especially thefts. Shelton believes a majority of those numbers are because of the city's growth, and lack of growth from its police department.

Shelton hopes the hotline is no more than a couple weeks away from being implemented.

Several counties and cities in the area have established crime stoppers hotlines. Information on crime stoppers in your area is available at www.thetexascrimestoppers.org.
