School District to discuss scoreboard funding

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The Commerce School Board Monday evening is scheduled to consider purchasing advertisement space on the new Memorial Stadium Scoreboard at A&M-Commerce.

The University's Athletic Director Carlton Cooper is working to obtain funds for the board, which costs at total of $650,000. Once erected, it would be the second largest scoreboard in Division II football.

Back in February, the City of Commerce agreed to advertising space on the board at an annual cost of $10,000 over five years. The advertisement will appear on the north side of the board facing Live Oak Street.

Cooper projects that the new scoreboard, along with additional seating on the east side of the stadium, will help bring in more events and boost city revenue, namely hotel bookings. Cooper mentioned bringing in more neutral site games for high school playoffs as well as a possible classic game. Additional commitments for funding of the scoreboard are sought.

The School Board is also scheduled to consider reservation of fund balance and conduct a budget study workshop. The Commerce ISD Board of Trustees meets Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Curriculum and Technology Center, 606 Culver Street.
