Schools Do Have Safety Audits on File

Contrary to a report from the Texas Attorney General’s office, area school districts do have school safety audits on file with the Texas School Safety Center.Steve Johnson, Superintendent with the Miller Grove Independent School District in Cumby said the statement issued Monday by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott was based on inaccurate information.

Abbott’s statement claimed that of the 1,025 school districts in the state that are required by law to submit safety audits, 38 had not done so and another 40 districts reported, but did not meet full compliance. However, Johnson said Abbott received an inaccurate report from the Texas School Safety Center.

Cooper ISD Superintendent Denicia Hohenberger issued a letter to parents Tuesday, assuring them that the district is and has been in full compliance with the audits. Officials with the Leonard Independent School District could not be reached Wednesday afternoon. Johnson said the Miller Grove school district has been compliant with the law since 2006.
