Sentenced handed down in manlslaughter case

By Kevin Jefferies

Hunt County – A sentence has been handed down for a West Tawakoni man that pled guilty to manslaughter. 55 year old Charles Collin Davis III was sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting to providing a lethal dose of heroin to Brian Leslie Smith in August of 2005. Davis was indicted last December under allegations of delivering or providing heroin to Smith, providing a syringe to use the drug, and failing to call for medical assistance once Smith fell unconscious. The incident occurred in Davis' home in West Tawakoni.

A motion had been filed to increase Davis' potential punishment. The motion claimed Davis had been convicted of both murder and attempted murder in Dallas County in 1997, and sought to increase the manslaughter charge from a second to a first degree felony.

Davis entered the guilty plea after the motion had been made, and was the sentenced.
