Services scheduled for local professors

Commerce – Services are set for Wednesday for Dr. Jesse Jefferson Hawthorne, Professor Emeritus of Health, Kinesiology, and Sports Studies, who died Saturday. Dr. Hawthorne taught for more than 30 years at East Texas State University, earning multiple awards and honors.

He was also a member of several community organizations, serving as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, and United Way of Commerce. In 1997, he was selected as Outstanding Citizen of Commerce. Hawthorne also held the status of Commerce Mayor Pro-tem for a period.

During World War II, Hawthorne was a navigator with the Air Transport Command.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Commerce under the direction of Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery.

Services are also planned for Dr. Jack Ingram, professor emeritus of business administration and management information systems at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Dr. Ingram was on the faculty from 1968 through 1996, and then taught on a modified basis until 2006.

The 79-year-old Ingram was struck and killed last week while crossing a roadway in Commerce.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Commerce.
