Severe weather hits area

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – One motorist was left stranded after lightning struck their car yesterday after severe weather hit parts of the area. Hunt County did not see much severe weather yesterday evening, but Hopkins County and parts of Rains and Van Zandt Counties were put under flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings. More than two inches of rain fell in Sulphur Springs in ten minutes just before 6pm yesterday evening. Southern Rains and northern Van Zandt counties saw parts of a storm that reportedly carried winds of more than 60 miles per hour.

The DPS helped one motorist along I-30 when a bolt of lightning hit the vehicle they were driving. No one was injured, but the electrical systems in the car were severely damaged.
