About 20 residents of the City of Campbell and the surrounding area gathered inside the Campbell Community Center Thursday night, to hear from Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks.

Meeks hosted the second in a planned series of town hall meetings, and brought along his command staff, County Commissioner for Precinct 4 Jim Latham, Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1 Place 1 Wayne Money and others.

During the session, Meeks pointed out how when he took office in 2009, he divided the county into four districts, based on call volume. Campbell is included in District 1, which includes much of Hunt County north of Interstate 30 and east of State Highway 34, and which is the largest of the districts in terms of square miles.

“However, we have the least amount of calls for service in this area,” he said, adding those numbers are on the decline.

Meeks said there were 495 calls for service from the district in 2013, and 435 in 2014.

“We are very much aware that Campbell does not have a police department,” Meeks said. “So, we are through here quite a bit. I hope that you see our patrol vehicles here, because we care quite a bit about Campbell.”

The members of the audience asked questions about the outcome of the 2010 incident in which a plane flying across Hunt County dropped bags of marijuana before a forced landing near Caddo MIlls, the county’s policies on handling stray cattle, regulations on scrap yards and the enforcement of sanitation and sewage problems.

Meeks encouraged the residents to contact his office if they have any concerns about suspicious or potential illegal activity in their community.

“I don’t care how minute or how silly you think it is, call us and we will send somebody out,” Meeks said.

Meeks was asked after the session if there was any update concerning the status of the investigation into the video from the March 4 arrest of Deanna Robinson, in which a Hunt County Sheriff’s deputy is shown striking Robinson.

The probe into the incident has been referred to the Texas Rangers, although Meeks believes it may be close to wrapping up.

Meeks said he spoke to the Ranger handling the case Thursday morning.

“He says he is about through with his investigation,” Meeks said. “I think by the early part of next week we should have some more to report on that.”
