SPCA of Texas removes 100 cats, dogs from Commerce location

Update, June 5, 3:57 p.m.:

SPCA of Texas spokesperson Maura Davies has said that the June 4 transfer of animals happened at a location in Commerce. Because of the possibility that criminal charges might be filed, the SPCA of Texas is not releasing any other identifying information about the location or the people involved, other than that the animals were taken from a "rescue group."

One employee from the Hunt County Precinct 2 Constable's office was present during yesterday's event, Davies said.

If the SPCA of Texas decides to file charges against the group, the charges would be a violation of the Class A Misdemeanor Cruelty to Non-livestock Animals statute, Davies said. It would be filed by Pct. 1 Hunt County Constable if they do end up being filed, she said.

Original story: A Hunt County animal rescue group has voluntarily surrendered 100 dogs and cats to the SPCA of Texas on June 4.

SPCA of Texas spokesperson Maura Davies said that 63 cats and  37 dogs were removed from the property. She said that the SPCA of Texas is not releasing the name of the Hunt County group because criminal charges could be pending.

The animals will undergo a medical evaluation at an SPCA facility, Davies said.

The SPCA has seized hundreds of animals in Hunt County over the past year, including 200 animals from the now-closed Frank Barchard Memorial Shelter near Wolfe City, and one animal from the City of Commerce-operated Commerce Animal Shelter.
