Commerce – Legendary football coach and current Texas A&M University System Board of Regents member, Gene Stallings, will serve as the keynote speaker at the Harvey Martin Classic Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 9, at noon at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel.
"We are excited and honored to have Gene Stallings as our keynote speaker for the Harvey Martin Classic Luncheon," said Dr. Dan Jones, A&M-Commerce president. "Coach Stallings is a legendary figure in college football and is one of the most engaging speakers around."
Stallings, who will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December, began his coaching career with the Texas A&M Aggies in 1965, and won a national championship with Alabama in 1992. He coached professionally for 18 years as an assistant to Tom Landry and the Dallas Cowboys and as head coach of the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals for four seasons. Stallings will share his knowledge of the game, as well as his experiences off the field for guests at the luncheon.
"It is a great thrill to have a legend like Gene Stallings speak at our banquet," said Guy Morriss, A&M-Commerce head football coach. "He continues to be a great ambassador for this university and the East Texas region."
Stallings is the winner of multiple awards, including various coaching and humanitarian honors. He is the author of the book, "Another Season," which describes the love he has for his son who was born with Down's syndrome. He was appointed to the board of regents by Texas Governor Rick Perry in 2005, and serves as the board's special athletic liaison to the A&M System.
"Coach Stallings serving on the board of regents provides leadership and inspiration for the university system that covers the state of Texas," Jones said. "I'm eager to hear his message, and grateful for all he does to move our university forward."
The Harvey Martin Classic Press Conference will kick off the week's events on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at noon in the Dallas City Hall Flag Room. Following Thursday's luncheon, the Harvey Martin Classic Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 10 at The Golf Club at Castle Hills in Lewisville. All events lead up to the football game pitting the A&M-Commerce Lions against the Angelo State Rams on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. in the historic Cotton Bowl.
