Updated June 20, 2018, 2:44 p.m.: The driver in the story below has been identified as 30-year-old Matthias Slaughter of Garland. He is being held at the Hunt County Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault against a public servant, driving while intoxicated, evading arrest, and resisting arrest.
A Texas state trooper and a fleeing suspect were injured in an exchange of gunfire following a traffic stop Tuesday evening.
The incident happened at about 6:30 p.m. on Interstate 30, near the Division Street exit. State Department of of Public Safety Sergeant Lonny Haschel said that a state trooper pulled over a westbound Chrysler SUV, believing the driver was intoxicated. The driver reportedly got out of the SUV, but then stepped back in and drove away. The officer, caught in the SUV, was dragged for about 100 yards as the suspect sped away.
The officer then reportedly shot the driver, leading to a crash. The driver then got out and ran, until the officer caught him.
Police say that both the officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-critical injuries. The westbound lanes of I-30 were closed for several hours late into Tuesday night. Texas Rangers were on the scene investigating the incident until late last night.
