Student Resource Officer approved

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – The Commerce City Council passed an agreement with Commerce Schools in regular session last night for the implementation of a Student Resource Officer. The agreement was passed by the Commerce ISD Board of Trustees on Monday and sets the path to have a police officer stationed primarily at the high school at all times during the school year.

In the agreement, the schools will pay 75% of the officer's salary while the city pays the rest. When not on assignment in primary capacity, the SRO will perform other police duties for Commerce.

Advertising for the position will begin soon and an interview committee will be formed of members representing both the city and the school district. Once a hire is made, the officer will train with the Commerce Field Training Officer and begin official Student Resource Officer training.
