Student Resource Officer search underway in Commerce

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – The search is on for a student resource officer for Commerce Schools. The school district and the City of Commerce have finalized an agreement for hiring the SRO that will be stationed primarily at the high school during the school year. The officer will function as an additional Commerce Police Officer during summer months.

Commerce City Manager Bill Shipp said he expects the search for the SRO to take about a month with the final applicant being chosen by a committee of city and school personnel. Then 14 weeks of field training as a Commerce Police Officer will ensue before the resource officer will take his position at the school.

In addition to a presence as law enforcement at the school, plans are to have the student resource officer conduct safety programs at all the campuses.
