Students' names released in crosswalk accident

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – Authorities have released the names of the two students hit last night while trying to cross a crosswalk along Highway 50.

As of Friday afternoon, 19-year-old Lorena Garcia was listed in critical, but stable condition at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. She was thrown approximately 75 feet after being hit by an SUV traveling northbound on the highway.

The other victim, 19-year-old Rayhan Sarwar, who ended up in the median, was treated at Presbyterian Hospital in Greenville. His injuries were said to be non life threatening.

It was unclear whether the flashing crosswalk warning system was activated while Garcia and Sarwar were attempting to cross.
