A higher percentage of students from Northeast Texas finished college than students statewide. That’s according to data put together by the Texas Tribune, which looked at graduation rates among 300,000 public school students who completed 8th grade in 2005. Statewide, 21 percent of those students have graduated from college by now. Ten of the 11 counties comprising Northeast Texas exceeded that average. Hunt County was the only one to come in below the state average. About 19 percent of Hunt County’s 2005 8th graders have completed college.
Collin, Lamar, and Delta counties surpassed the state average most. Nearly 29 percent of Collin County students in the study graduated from college. More than a quarter of the students from Lamar and Delta counties did so.
At almost 76 percent, Texas Education Service Center Region 7, which covers parts of Van Zandt and Wood counties, had the highest percentage of students finish high school in the three regions that cover Northeast Texas.
