Sulphur Springs doctor appointed to statewide post

Sulphur Springs – Local physician I. L. Balkcom IV has assumed duties as the new president of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.

A physician with the Medical-Surgical Clinic in Sulphur Springs, Dr. Balkcom was sworn in during the group's Annual Session and Scientific Assembly in Dallas on July 30.

As TAFP president, he'll represent the entire Academy of some 6,300 family physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students. He will establish goals and objectives for the organization, and monitor and evaluate the organizational effectiveness and accomplishments of the membership.

Dr. Balkcom has practiced family medicine since 1987. He was awarded a B.S. degree in Biology by Georgia Southwestern in Americus, Ga., and was awarded a medical degree by La Autonoma De Guadalajara, Mexico, and Ross University, Portsmouth, West Indies.
